Grinding vs. full removal
Grinding leaves the roots to decay in place and is the usual choice for lawns. Full extraction pulls the root ball and is more disruptive, but can make sense before building or hardscaping. A stump company can tell you which fits your plans.
Typical cost
One NJ company's published guide puts stump grinding at roughly $100–$500 per stump depending on diameter, root spread and access (source). Multiple stumps in one visit often cost less per stump. Quotes come from the company that sees the job.
Before the grinder arrives
New Jersey law requires a free utility markout call to 811 before digging; ask the stump company whether they will request it for your job (NJ One Call).
