Tree permits in Stafford
Stafford's Chapter 194, “Trees,” requires a permit before removing a street tree of 2.5 inches DBH or more, or a non-street tree of 6 inches DBH or more. Applications go to the Department of Community Development and Planning, and the fee is $25 per residential lot. Trees that meet the ordinance's definition of a nuisance or hazard can be exempt from fees and replacement, but written notice may still be required (Stafford Code Ch. 194, Community Development). Confirm details with the township.
Local notes
Removed trees may have to be replaced or covered by a payment under the ordinance, so ask your tree company whether replacement plantings are included in the quote.
Before you hire
New Jersey requires tree care businesses to be licensed through the NJ Board of Tree Experts. Ask for the company's Licensed Tree Care Operator number and certificate of insurance. For stump grinding, the free 811 utility markout is required before digging (NJ One Call).
Storm damage or a tree on a wire?
If there is immediate danger, call 911. Stay away from downed lines and report them to your electric utility. Then see what to do after a storm and what insurance usually covers.
